The ability to tie a variety of knots and lashings continues to be a hugely valuable life skill and one that is particularly useful when it comes to pioneering activities within scouting. To achieve the pioneering badge, Cubs need to:

  • Make their own rope
  • Tie a simple lashing
  • Demonstrate three knots (e.g. reef, figure of eight, sheet bend, bowline etc)
  • Demonstrate one hitch (e.g. clove hitch, round turn and two half-hitches, timber hitch etc)
  • Take part in a knot game
  • Build an indoor pioneering project using simple knots and lashings
