Pioneering
The ability to tie a variety of knots and lashings continues to be a hugely valuable life skill and one that is particularly useful when it comes to pioneering activities within scouting. We try to teach the Cubs a few of the knots, bends and lashings below as part of their pioneering badge – these great instructional videos are all made by www.animatedknots.com.
To achieve the pioneering badge, Cubs need to:
- Make their own rope
- Tie a simple lashing
- Demonstrate three knots (e.g. reef, figure of eight, sheet bend, bowline etc)
- Demonstrate one hitch (e.g. clove hitch, round turn and two half-hitches, timber hitch etc)
- Take part in a knot game
- Build an indoor pioneering project using simple knots and lashings
